When eczema occurs on the face, it restricts what treatment can be used. Eczema on face can cause more psychological hardship on the individual. Not all types of eczema is likely to occur on the face, but atopic dermatitis can. Eczema on the face can range from a small rash to a rash that covers the entire face.

Atopic eczema on face may be caused by exposure to an allergen in the air or one that had direct contact with the face. The skin on the face is often more sensitive than on the rest of the body. Smoke or chemical fumes may trigger the development of atopic dermatitis on the face. A reaction to something in makeup, soap, or moisturizer used on the face is a common trigger for eczema on the face. If the individual suspects that the facial eczema was caused by a product used on the face, the person should avoid using that product.

When people have eczema on their faces, they may feel self-conscious about their appearance. After all, the face is what people see in public. A noticeable rash on the face can even affect someone’s self-esteem. A child with eczema on the face may be teased or bullied. A child or adolescent with eczema on their face may need significant reassurance from parents in order to overcome the psychological effects of teasing or feeling self-conscious about their appearance.

Some people try to hide an eczema rash on the face by applying heavy makeup. Often, the attempts are not very successful since a facial eczema rash tends to have a lot of peeling or flaky skin. Therefore, the makeup will either not adhere to the area of the rash or it will flake off as the skin flakes. The makeup may irritate the skin. If powder is used on the rash, the powder will dry the skin even more making the rash worse.

A physician or dermatologist may prescribe Elidel or a similar medication for the treatment of eczema on the face. Corticosteroid eczema medications cannot be used on the face. In between the applications of eczema medication, the person should focus on keeping the skin moisturized. The moisturizer used should be a hypoallergenic moisturizer. Moisturizer should be applied frequently throughout the day to hydrate the skin. Someone with eczema on the face should consult a doctor to devise a treatment plan for eczema on face. The plan can treat the current outbreak and perhaps reduce the risk of future flare-ups.
