Eczema And Diet
Many people have misunderstandings of how atopic dermatitis and diet are related. Some people suggest avoiding the consumption of certain foods as a way to prevent atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is not the same as hives caused by food allergies.
Consuming foods do not cause atopic dermatitis. Hives from a food allergy is a skin reaction from eating food that triggers an immune system response. Atopic dermatitis is caused by a substance coming in contact with the skin and causing an immune system response.
Atopic dermatitis and diet are not directly related. However, some physicians feel that eating certain foods may worsen atopic dermatitis. Since the 1930’s, there have been cases reported in which eating certain foods has triggered or worsened an atopic dermatitis outbreak. But, the cases have only been sporadically reported and some feel that those cases are about food allergies and not true atopic dermatitis.
A person who is prone to atopic dermatitis may also have an allergic reaction to handling certain foods just like other substances can cause reactions. The foods that are most commonly found to be problematic are eggs, milk, wheat, seafood, peanuts, and soy. Some physicians feel that parents who have atopic dermatitis should avoid feeding their children those foods, especially while the children are infants.
One of the most important things someone with atopic dermatitis can do is to make sure they are consuming water and natural foods that have high water content like fresh fruit, canned fruit, and natural juices. These foods can help keep the body, including the skin, hydrated. Eating foods that help keep the skin hydrated can help prevent atopic dermatitis rashes.
Some people experience atopic dermatitis from handling seafood or other foods. Other things that tend to cause problems for someone with atopic dermatitis are harsh soaps, detergents, cleaning products, chemicals, perfumed hygiene products, and some fabrics. If someone with atopic dermatitis must handle products to which they are sensitive, then they should wear protection like gloves.
Adding things to the diet to prevent outbreaks of atopic dermatitis is one form of home remedies for atopic dermatitis. Some people consume supplements or primrose oil to prevent atopic dermatitis. Primrose oil is not an effective home remedy. A person should consult a physician before using a home remedy. If a person with atopic dermatitis has questions about their condition and how to prevent flare-ups, the individual should consult the physician or dermatologist.
