Eating a Balanced Diet with Multiple Allergies
For those with multiple allergies maintaining a balanced nutritious diet can be a real concern. Depending on your food allergies it may be difficult for you to get all of your nutrients in the foods you can eat. Sometimes it may be necessary to visit a nutritionist, and it may also become necessary to consider supplements in order to be sure that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. For those that must avoid entire food groups and particularly young children who are growing rapidly, it is essential that you get professional advice about how to balance your diet.
Calcium can be a particularly difficult nutrient since the main source of calcium is thru milk products, but milk can be substituted with soy milk or even rice milk, both of which are fortified with calcium and vitamin D. If you are unable to drink either of these there are several foods that are high in calcium such as broccoli, tinned fish, parsley, baked beans, dates, almonds, and bread. If necessary supplement your calcium with a high quality calcium supplement.
Those with multiple allergies are frequently low in selenium; you can supplement this or if you are able to you can eat legumes, or meats which are rich in this mineral.
Omega 3s are essential for many important bodily functions and may even help your body to fight immune dysfunction. Fish is the number one source for this important nutrient but if you cannot eat fish consider flaxseed, canola, walnuts or spinach.
Iron is another important nutrient concern for those with multiple allergies if you are low in iron you can get iron from a number of sources including beans, fortified cereals, tofu, dried apricots, raisins, nuts, and leafy greens. Iron can also be obtained from a supplement if need be.
Eating as varied and healthy a diet as possible is probably the best way to keep your nutrients in balance and help you get what you need to stay healthy. A nutritionist can help you look thru your allergies and suggest substitute foods for those nutrients you may be missing. She can then suggest a good multivitamin that will be allergy free and will supply the rest of what you may be lacking.
