Celiac Disease and Adrenal Fatigue

There are many complications that come with celiac disease and these various symptoms and complications can wreak havoc on a person’s body leaving them weak, exhausted and sick. While eating a gluten free diet can often rectify many of these problems, it can often take time for the damage to repair itself enough to for this to happen. This is because the mucosal lining of the small intestine has been damaged leaving it unable to absorb the nutrients your body needs to make the necessary repairs.

For some that have lived a life time without diagnosis or for whom gluten has literally destroyed their intestines this healing can take a very long time, for some it can take years before they actually start to feel completely better, and this is assuming that they are able to keep all of the gluten out of their diet during that time which is something that new celiac patient find difficult to do since gluten is hidden in everything.

Often times the complications of celiac disease can create more symptoms and problems than the disease itself. One such complication is adrenal fatigue, which is characterized by exhaustion that is unremitting, anxiety, stress or feeling overwhelmed. This may seem like symptoms of your celiac disease but if the exhaustion does not go away readily after changing diet it is wise to look at other sources and adrenal fatigue is one such source that may require additional treatment to overcome.

The adrenal glands are very small but their job is very important, they produce the hormone cortisol that is required by the body to prevent inflammation and tissue destruction, as well as keeping blood sugar level, and many other important functions. Looking at this list it is not hard to see why celiac disease might cause this condition, since gluten creates an abundance of inflammation and destruction. This sort of immune reaction creates a huge strain on the adrenals and depending on how long your celiac disease went unchecked, adrenal fatigue may be extensive and require treatment of its own to bring it back into balance.

Glad to see someone taking on this topic at last. I think many with CD are also affected by AF and just don’t realize it. Here’s pretty helpful article — imo — about Eating to support your adrenal glands — small choices can make a difference . It doesn’t mention CD specifically, but does gives lots of advice for how to divvy up meals throughout the day for the benefit of the adrenals.
